Lab Grown Oval Engagement Rings: Full UK Price Guide

Lab grown diamonds are chemically, physically and optically identical to mined diamonds — same carbon lattice structure, same hardness, same fire and brilliance. The only difference is origin: one formed in the earth over a billion years, the other in a lab over a few weeks. On an oval cut specifically, where a larger visible carat weight matters more than on a round (see our cut, carat and clarity guide), lab grown makes the biggest practical difference of any decision in the buying process.

What lab grown actually costs versus natural

A lab grown oval diamond typically costs around a third of a natural diamond of equal carat, cut, colour and clarity. In practice, that means the budget for a 1ct natural oval buys close to a 2ct lab grown oval at the same specification — and because oval already reads roughly 10% larger than its carat weight, a 2ct lab grown oval looks substantially larger on the hand than most people expect from that number.

Real UK price ranges

Within our own lab grown oval range: a 1ct lab grown oval in a solitaire setting, 9ct gold, VS2 clarity, G colour, typically runs somewhere in the low £900s–£1,200s depending on exact specification. The same specification as a natural diamond would typically be two to three times that figure. At 2ct, the gap widens further in absolute terms, which is why lab grown is particularly popular for larger centre stones — the saving compounds with size.

Can a jeweller tell the difference by eye?

No. Lab grown and natural diamonds cannot be distinguished visually, even by a trained jeweller, without specialist equipment that reads trace growth patterns invisible to the naked eye. Every lab grown diamond we sell is laser-inscribed with a certificate number and independently graded, exactly as a natural stone would be — the certification process is identical, just noting the origin.

The honest trade-off

The case for natural: it came out of the ground and is genuinely finite, which matters to some people symbolically and for long-term resale value, since lab grown diamonds currently hold less resale value than natural stones of equal grade. The case for lab grown: everything visible is identical, and the saved budget can go into a larger stone, better clarity, or a better setting. Neither is more "real" — both are diamonds by every chemical and gemological definition; the choice is about what matters to you, not about authenticity.

Common questions

Is a lab grown oval diamond a real diamond?

Yes — identical carbon structure, hardness and optical properties to a mined diamond. The only difference is where and how it formed, not what it is.

How much cheaper is a lab grown oval diamond than natural?

Roughly a third of the price for the same carat, cut, colour and clarity specification — meaning the same budget typically buys around double the carat weight in lab grown.

Do lab grown diamonds hold their value?

Less well than natural diamonds currently, since lab grown production capacity is still increasing and prices have been falling. If resale value matters more than upfront saving, this is a genuine factor to weigh.
